Housecleaning can take up a big chunk of your day—especially when doing a deep spring cleaning! Try these inexpensive, nontoxic cleaning tips.

Citrus Sink Scrub
Use a cut-up grapefruit or lemon covered in salt to clean soap scum buildup on your sinks. The citric acid from the grapefruit combines with the coarseness of the salt to create an easy citrus scrub that smells delicious. Spa day for your sinks! Note: Never use acids on marble.

Vinegar Soak
Remove hard-water deposits from a showerhead or faucet by soaking it in distilled white vinegar for 1-2 hours. An easy trick is to partially fill a plastic bag with vinegar and tie it around your showerhead so that it’s submerged. Then scrub the showerhead with a toothbrush to remove any stubborn deposits.

Black Tea Glass Cleaner
Fingerprint smudges and household dust quickly create a cloudy haze on glass and mirrors. Fill a spray bottle with strong brewed black tea (three bags of tea to 8 ounces of boiling water, cooled). Spray your glass or mirrors and wipe dry. You’ll be rewarded with a sparkling shine.

Clean Out Your Trash Cans
Over time, garbage cans in your home can accumulate odors. Empty all your trash cans and sprinkle them with baking soda to absorb odors. Let sit, then wipe them down inside and out, scrubbing off any dried-on leaks from your trash. You can add a few drops of essential oils to your clean cans for a fresh smell.

Shower Curtain Wash
Don’t overlook your shower curtain and liner. Ideally, you should wash your shower curtain monthly—just pop it in the washing machine with a load of laundry, adding a half cup of distilled white vinegar to clean off the soap scum and bacteria. Then hang it back up in the shower so it can dry in place.
