A Good Faith Estimate, or GFE, is a form provided by a lender to an approved mortgage loan applicant, that provides an estimate of settlement charges and loan terms. The Department of Housing and Urban Development, HUD, has created a new GFE in an effort to help homebuyers better understand the terms of an offered mortgage. This, in turn, makes it easier for borrowers to comparison-shop different mortgage offerings. HUD claims that the new GFE will "help borrowers save nearly $700."
