Breathe New Life into Inherited Furniture
By ARA

Inherited furniture can be a blessing or a burden. How do you decide if inherited furnishings have "good bones" and are worth revitalizing with fresh fabrics and custom details? The design mavens at Calico Corners offer the following advice:

First consider whether you really like the piece. Is it comfortable? And is there a place for it in your home?

Reupholstery is major surgery for furniture. Springs are replaced and retied. Fillings and foam are renewed. The frame is reinforced if needed. In short, you'll practically have a new piece of furniture when the upholsterer is finished.

Whether you are designing a new piece or redoing an older one, custom details can make all the difference. It's easy to find great fabrics—Calico Corners offers more than 3,000 choices—to create a great new look for an inherited or antique piece of furniture.

Although it is not quite as abrasive as more costly scrubs that contain chlorine, you don't have to worry about fumes or potentially harmful chemical reactions or skin irritations. Baking soda is also safe for drain pipes and for the ground water supply.

Vinegar is a natural antibacterial and anti fungal cleanser that can be used as a drain and sink deodorizer... Read More
Gorgeous Garden Perennials
By J. A. Young
Choosing plants for the garden and patio can be a daunting task given the wide range of beautiful plants that are available. The following perennials, however, are worth considering for a special focal point of the landscape.

Autumn joy sedum offers lovely deep pink tufted blooms for the garden. Full sunlight and a well-draining soil are two requirements for this plant. Because they can thrive in less-than-ideal conditions, they are a hardy perennial that is easy to care for.

Beebalm is a distinctive ornamental plant with gorgeous flowers. Although it can be an aggressive spreader, when held at bay it will add beauty to any setting. This perennial prefers moist soil and plenty of sunlight... Read More
