Mirrors Making a Design Comeback
By ARA

The use of mirrors in interior design hit their peak in the 1970s, when they could be found on walls, in architectural designs, and even on some ceilings. Over the next 10 years, their use declined, but designers are incorporating them again in new designs that add substance to style.

This emerging increase of mirror use was highlighted by the 2006 Mirrorlink.org Design Awards competition, sponsored by the Mirror Division of GANA, which is comprised of North American manufacturers and suppliers of quality mirrors for use in design, as well as in furniture and other residential and commercial applications.

Protect Your New Countertops
By Mary Ward
When you spend a pretty penny for beautiful new countertops, it makes sense to protect them from damage. While a potholder or a folded up kitchen towel will do in a pinch, a trivet offers much better protection. Just make sure you choose a trivet that has felt or some other soft material on the bottom to avoid scratches. When you pull something hot off the stove or out of the oven, grab a trivet, before setting it on your countertops.

Another attractive option is finding a great looking piece of tile. Make sure it is fairly large and that it isn't delicate, so it can withstand heat. Glue felt to the bottom or add some soft fabric at the corners for easy movement and so it won't scratch your countertops. Polish up the tile and use it as an accessory. Because it looks so nice, you won't have to hide it away in a cabinet, and it will always be accessible when you need it.

It's also important to keep a good cutting board handy so no one will be tempted to cut directly on your countertops. Wood is nice, but glass will look even better.
