Five Problems Most Homeowner's Insurance Doesn't Cover

Policies for homeowner's insurance usually take several pages to explain the circumstances that are covered under the policy guidelines. Most homeowners don't bother to take the time to read through them, even when they attempt to submit a claim. Here is a look at some of the situations that most homeowner's insurance doesn't cover, unless you obtain a rider (i.e., add-on) policy that does.

1. Termites and Other Pests
Most insurance companies do not offer protection against the kind of damage created by an invasion of pests, including rodents, bedbugs, and termites. As a result, the homeowner is responsible for any damage that occurs.

2. Damage Caused by Your Sewage System
Sadly, most insurers don't provide protection against any damage caused by a faulty sewage system, unless the homeowner obtains a separate rider for it. While you might not expect your sewage system to back up, it can happen.

3. Cracks Caused by Sinkholes
Sinkholes can lead to cracks developing in the structure of your home, particularly the walls and floors. This type of coverage is often included as part of a rider that offers protection against earthquakes.

4. Mold Issues
Most insurers limit coverage for damage caused by mold growth in the home. Some don't provide any protection at all against problems resulting from mold, while a few simply limit the type of circumstances that are covered.

5. Flooding and Water Damage
A standard homeowner's policy doesn't provide protection against flood damage. Even if you live in a low-risk flood area, it is important to obtain this type of coverage as a rider. Heavy rainstorms can lead to flooding in the home in a matter of minutes.

Review the insurance policy for your home to make sure it offers the type of coverage you want. If you have any questions, talk with your insurance agent to get answers. If necessary, consider getting an add-on policy that provides protection for circumstances that aren't covered in the standard insurance policy for homes in your area.
