DIY Architectural Details on the Cheap

Architectural details in particular give a level of sophistication and perfection that you can't replicate with a simple fix like paint. But there's a catch: they're (usually) expensive. Here's some fun DIY projects to add architectural elements to your home without spending too much:

Wow-Worthy Wainscoting
This detail is gorgeous in a home. Typical wainscoting consists of white-painted boards with contrasting square or rectangular patterns. The boards run roughly halfway up the wall between the baseboard and horizontal trim and serve as a chair rail along the entire wall. It's beautiful but the traditional version is pricey, especially if you hire out the labor.

For a low-cost, DIY version, forget the wood board underneath the trim. Instead, apply the trim directly to the wall in a rectangle or square and buy some baseboard to use as your chair rail. Then, paint everything white, from the chair rail down to the floor. You won't even notice that it's the wall and not wood!

Creative Ceiling
Nothing screams custom like a detailed ceiling. Wood beams are standard additions to ceilings as are ornate sheets of tile and thick, patterned trim. These features add that extra something to a home, but at a hefty price point.

A low-cost way to transform your ceiling is to start with paint. Then, put up a ceiling medallion, which is usually round, ornate, and surrounds the ceiling light fixture, to add some architectural detail. The best part is that it can cost as little as $15. What a deal!

While paint is a great option to transform a room, go a little further and add some architectural detail on the cheap. With some elbow grease and deal-hunting skills, you can add fun details to your home.
