Every homeowner has ideas about the perfect exterior landscape. This ideal landscape usually includes a combination of the perfect lawn, lush greenery, a beautiful patio or even an enchanting gazebo. Landscaping is not easy, but the rewards of creating the perfect landscape are worth the effort.

To get the most out of your landscape design, it is important to avoid a number of common mistakes. Some of these common mistakes are outlined below.

Not Coordinating the Home & Landscape - Remember that the landscape should enhance the home it surrounds; it should never overwhelm or detract from the home’s appearance. Use flowers and plants to coordinate your home’s exterior with other landscape elements.
Underestimating the Cost – Although underestimating costs is a common mistake with any home improvement project, landscape projects can be particularly prone to cost overruns. Be realistic about the anticipated costs before starting a landscaping project, because it can be an expensive undertaking.

Keeping it in the Dark - Lighting is an integral part of a properly designed landscape, so take these lighting needs into account when designing your perfect landscape. Incorporate lights into the design, especially along steps, pathways, driveways and patios. A combination of traditional and solar lighting can be used to provide maximum efficiency.

Keeping up with the Joneses - Simply imitating your neighbor's landscape design will not result in a pleasing look, either for your own home or for the neighborhood as a whole. While it is fine to pick up ideas from a number of sources, including the neighbors, your landscape design should reflect your own individual taste.

Ignoring the Backyard - When it comes to designing a great landscape, many homeowners focus exclusively on the curb appeal of their property, while ignoring the more private backyard. The backyard should be a relaxing, pleasant, outdoor space that family and friends can enjoy.
