Because windows greatly affect the energy consumption of a home, one of the biggest factors considered in purchasing windows will be energy efficiency.
Double paned windows are the standard for new construction as well as window replacement. To increase energy efficiency, double paned windows are offered with gases injected between the panes. Additives and construction quality affect the clarity of windows, as well as their energy efficiency rating so do your research on many different window manufacturers.
In older homes, the decision to install replacement windows may be based largely on maintaining the historical integrity of the home. Homeowners may be surprised to learn that single paned replacement windows are still available on the market today. They are sold for exactly this purpose—to maintain the historical look of a home. |
Buying single paned windows does not have to mean giving up energy efficiency. Solid panes of glass, called panels, can be installed over the exterior window surface. The highly efficient energy panels do not affect the historical integrity of single paned windows.
Look for the Energy Star symbol when shopping for replacement windows. Keep in mind that you may qualify for a rebate from the manufacturer or energy companies when you purchase Energy Star rated replacement windows. Replacement windows should also carry a rating label from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Five ratings will measure how much heat the replacement window loses (u-factor), how much solar heat it blocks (SHGC), the amount of light the replacement window allows (visible transmittance), air leaking around installed windows (air leakage), and the window's ability to resist moisture condensation (condensation resistance). |
