The Potential of Tile
By J. A. Young

Tile, and its many uses around the home, is a versatile material that can be adapted to any style and virtually any décor. Because every type of tile will have hundreds of possible designs, textures and colors, a homeowner’s first decision is choosing a type of tiling. Because of the vast array of tile designs and colors, the most trouble a homeowner will have may be deciding between them.

Ceramic tiling is a popular choice that consistently produces impressive results. It seems to be an all-purpose material working equally well in the bathroom shower or on the patio. One of tiles greatest charms is the ease with which it may be maintained—most types of ceramic tile can be washed with mild detergent or an all-purpose household cleaner.

Ceramic tiling can be installed on walls, tubs, showers, countertops, fireplaces, stairs, floors and even as decorative borders. Designing with ceramic tiles is a pleasure; for example, a floor may employ Colonial Spanish tiles (classic blue and white patterns) with a border of complimenting blue tiles.

Or, tile can tie the patio together with the interior. A kitchen employing rich brick-colored ceramic tile may use it on the kitchen floor, the sink backsplash, the island’s countertop and right under the French doors to tile the patio area.
Although tile is functional, it also has unsurpassed decorative value making it a fine choice for any area of your home.

Resilient vinyl is a popular alternative to ceramic tile. Resilient vinyl tile is available in standard sizes and easy-to-apply shapes. Some tiles are actually self-stick for easy installation; others are installed with adhesive. Designs range from plain to highly elaborate. Interestingly, resilient tile can take on the look of brick, marble, and wood—even ceramic and at a far less expensive cost. Vinyl tile—a staple of the fifties—underwent a decrease in popularity, but it has made a come back due to its wide array of styles and maintenance ease.

Parquet tiles provide the undeniable charm and warmth that is inherent in wood flooring. Parquet exudes class and style and makes a wonderful flooring choice adaptable to nearly any home décor style. Parquet comes in a wide variety of designs and textures. Finished and unfinished tiles are available. Homeowners have the luxury of choosing from many different types of wood such as ash, cherry, walnut, maple, oak and more. For a long-lasting, visually stunning floor, parquet provides all the beauty wood affords. Parquet flooring can actually add to the value of your home; prospective buyers will find parquet an attractive benefit of the house.

Whatever type of tile you choose, always consider where you plan to use it and make sure it is the appropriate choice for that area. Carefully installing your tiling and maintaining it properly, should ensure that it lasts a long time.
