Designing Your Home Office
By L. Seeber

The first thing to consider when creating a home office is the functionality of the room. This will affect where you place your furniture, computer equipment, and even your file storage. Use graph paper to measure the dimensions of the room and draw out a few possibilities for different layouts. Remember to take into account where your windows are to take advantage of the natural light available.

Are you expecting clients to visit your home office? If so, a layout where your desk and chair are facing the door, welcoming your customers into the office space would be a great choice.

If you require privacy while doing your work, some shelves or a partition screen will discourage the curious onlooker.
Organize your space to make sure that everything you need is within easy reach. Nothing reduces productivity more than having to search to find what you need.

Consider your office color scheme. If you are expecting your customers or clients to visit your home office, perhaps a traditional or muted color scheme such as a dark, rich wood, or pale blue might be a way to go. Of course, you also want to consider what type of business you have, and what impression you want to give.

The last thing to consider is adding your own personal touch. Many small business owners with a home office will place a few family pictures on the wall, a favorite plant, or perhaps a comfortable love seat. Small touches are the best, and having them makes it that much easier to give a sense of a successful business to those who may wish to hire you.
