When it comes to buying things for your home, you want to make a smart investment and save money over the lifetime of your home products. Use these four tips as a starting point for doing your research before you buy.
1. Research which appliances are truly energy-efficient. Many brands can make this claim, but some appliances are better engineered than others. You can look for online reviews of products from independent sources to carefully select an appliance.

2. Research warranty and service plan options. When you purchase a home product such as an appliance, the retailer or the manufacturer may offer a warranty or service plan for an additional fee. Compare the product warranty with additional options and decide which option will fit your budget.
3. Look for a 30-day, money-back guarantee. Many retailers will refund your money if you are not satisfied with your purchase. The home product you seek is probably available from more than one retailer. Make your purchase from a store with a money-back guarantee.
4. Identify used products that serve just as well. You don't always have to buy new. Look for options at resale stores including consignment businesses and thrift stores. For example, a used couch in good condition can meet your needs for a fraction of the cost.
The Internet is a great tool for finding consumer product information that’s free. When you think about what home goods to purchase, you have to weigh quality against price. Your cost-benefit analysis will lead you to the right product choices for your home. |
