Creating a Trellis Fence

 Trellis fencing differs from latticework fencing because it is essentially attached to an existing barrier like an existing fence or possibly a garden wall. Most gardeners install trellis fencing to increase the height of their existing fencing as well as to create a living screen that supports climbing plants and vines. The blooming trellis offers a substantial boost in privacy as well as considerable beauty for the garden.
Adding trellis fencing to an existing fence, works great for urban and suburban yards. Not only does this type of addition provide a more attractive method of creating privacy, but it can also offer a touch more security. It can even be installed as a patio screen or to disguise an unsightly area of the landscape such as a tool shed, garbage area, or compost heap.
When choosing wood, be sure to choose pieces with a minimum thickness of one inch. |
The fencing must be sturdy, not only to last, but to provide adequate support for plant growth. Also, the wood must be treated with a preservative in order for it to withstand decay caused by the elements. Using cedar wood will add to the cost, but may provide greater durability. Paint or stain may be added to the fencing for a more complete look.
The panels are usually nailed to create a square or diamond pattern. Each square section generally measures six to eight inches. Twining vines, such as honeysuckle, will grow through the openings to create a living screen for the landscape. This type of feature can soften the look of a fence while creating a greater sense of privacy.
Adding a trellis fence is inexpensive. Any home improvement center will have all the required supplies. Of course, there are many trellis fence kits available at local garden centers or online that may make adding this feature easier than ever. Once the fencing is complete, vines and climbing plants can be added to complete the look. |
