Plaster Wall

Many homeowners are reluctant to tackle damage to their interior walls –things like cracks and small holes. In many cases, these problems can be easily repaired with simple tools and some inexpensive material. Taking the do-it-yourself approach is a great way to save money, while at the same time learning some valuable skills that may be useful down the road.
Cracks, which often appear in plaster walls, are a common problem that many homeowners face. If a crack continually reappears after several repairs, it may be a sign of structural damage or a shifting foundation. Although a professional should address large or reappearing cracks, a homeowner can easily repair simple cracks or small holes.

Fill in cracks or small holes by using a putty knife to apply a spackling compound. Spackling compound is available in any home improvement or hardware store. After the first coat has been applied it should be allowed to dry thoroughly before proceeding. If the first coat has shrunk, or if it appears to have left an indentation, a second coat should be applied. That coat should be allowed to thoroughly dry as well.

After the spackling compound has been applied and is completely dry, sand the area lightly with fine-grained sandpaper. The wall can be touched up with primer and painted to match the rest of the wall.
