Ideas to Enjoy the Holidays

People tend to get so busy they forget that it's the simple gifts, the simple activities and even the simple decor that usually creates the most enjoyable season. Here are some fantastic ideas to help your holiday season flow a little better.

Go for the Experience
Whether hosting a holiday dinner for family or friends or searching for a great gift for someone, focus on the experience instead of price or tangible gifts. One way is to host a "white elephant" gift exchange party and limit the gift pricing to $5 or $10 each. This enables guests to each receive a gift without everyone spending a lot of money. Think of fun ways to conduct the exchange; this is great for parties with ten people or more!

For experience-based gifts, consider buying tickets to concerts or gift cards to a dinner theater. Find out the recipient's favorite activity (golf, hunting, fishing, skiing, skating, bowling, movies, restaurants, etc.) and purchase tickets or gift cards for one of these. For the one that's more laid back, consider giving a free day at the spa!

Host a Fun Dinner Potluck
Why not have a variety of food themes (such as Italian, French, Southern, etc.) and ask each guest to bring an item from their favorite food category? Or, have a simple pot luck dinner so the expense won't fall on one person. Plan an ice breaker activity so that everyone can participate with minimal stress.

Decor from Home
Don't have time or money to spend on new holiday decor this year? Stick with the old, but spruce it up a bit. Last year's fall decor can go a long way by simply adding some leaves, sticks, pine cones/needles, etc. from the great outdoors. Make new homemade decorations with the kids. These are inexpensive if you find most of the materials required around the house. Visit thrift shops and yard sales for great bargains on holiday decor― folks are always selling their old decorations and buying new ones.

Reduce Stress with Planning
Most people become frustrated during the holidays simply because they don't plan ahead. Have a calendar planner on hand to make note of all the upcoming holiday events. Don't sweat it if you can't make it to all of them. Prioritize your events so you can make it to those that are most important to you and your family.

Don't Shop Until You Drop
In fact, doing most of your shopping online can help reduce stress. Minimize the number of gifts you buy; send cards instead. This is just as thoughtful...and much more affordable! Stick to a budget; you'll have peace of mind if you don't overspend.

Think about these ideas as the holidays draw near, and keep in mind that most people wish they could slow down and enjoy the season. Spread the word and help your family members and friends enjoy it too!
