Six Strategies to Stay Motivated During Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning is a tradition for most people, but it can quickly become overwhelming. Here are six tips from the experts that make it more manageable:

Start with a Main Checklist: Before diving into cleaning, create a checklist to keep track of tasks and ensure nothing gets missed. Break down tasks into manageable chunks to make them less overwhelming.

Make Decluttering a Priority: Clear out unnecessary items before cleaning to streamline the process and create more space. Consider making a separate decluttering checklist to tackle items that haven’t been used in a while.

Work Rewards into Your Plan: Motivate yourself by incorporating rewards into your cleaning plan. For instance, promise yourself a relaxing bubble bath or a coffee break with your favorite book after completing a challenging task like scrubbing the bathroom tiles.

Focus on Lesser-Completed Tasks: Target areas that often get overlooked during regular cleaning, such as baseboards and ceiling fans. Make a list of these tasks to ensure they are addressed during spring cleaning.

Ensure Adequate Supplies: Organize your cleaning supplies in a designated caddy or bin for easy access. Stock up on essentials like microfiber cloths, all-purpose cleaners, and gloves, and consider purchasing specialty products for tough stains or delicate surfaces.

Get Your Family on Board: Involve family members or roommates in the cleaning process to divide the workload. Turn on some fun music, assign age-appropriate tasks, and encourage teamwork, offering incentives like a pizza night or a movie marathon as a reward for collective effort.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying; it also offers psychological benefits by boosting mood and productivity and restoring a sense of control over our environment. While “spring” cleaning is typically annual, experts recommend doing it biannually to prepare for changing seasons.
