Character Sells: How to Add Character to Your Home Renovation Project

Adding character to your home is a wise investment. Not only will you end up with a beautiful and unique space, you’ll catch the attention of homebuyers when it comes time to sell. Here are the top six ways to add character that transforms your home into an inviting space.

1. Remove dated features.
Popcorn ceilings and faux-wood paneling make a space feel tired and dated. These elements will detract from your home’s architectural features.

2. Upgrade your baseboards.
A narrow baseboard disappears on an eight-foot-high wall. Fortunately, you can add height to your baseboards without major renovations. Install a strip of half-round trim a few inches above the existing baseboard. Paint the trim, the original baseboard, and the wall between the two in your trim color.

3. Install crown molding.
All styles―from dentil to cove―will add character to a space. Make sure the scale of the crown is proportional to the height of the ceiling. If you have low ceilings, stick with a simpler crown molding design. If your ceilings are 12 feet high, go for a more elaborate profile.

4. Install wainscoting.
But think beyond the traditional applications. Instead of applying beadboard at chair level, take it six feet up the wall and cap it with decorative trim. For a cottage-inspired board-and-batten look, nail strips of square wooden trim vertically along the wall every 12 inches. In a traditional home, install raised panel wainscoting from floor to ceiling for a luxe look.

5. Replace dated doorknobs.
Home renovators often overlook these small design elements, but doorknobs are one of the most utilized items in a home. Try cut-glass doorknobs for traditional homes and stainless levers for modern spaces.

6. Shop for antiques.
Antique pieces add interest and have more character than new mass-produced products. Look for a chandelier for your dining room or handles for your kitchen cabinets. Old wooden corbels can be used as shelf brackets in your living room, while an antique dresser or cabinet can be retrofitted as a bathroom vanity.
